Verbal Warning Michelada

A michelada is supposed to cure hangovers. This one might cause new problems. A quarter teaspoon of Verbal Warning hot sauce in a beer sounds mild until you remember it's roughly 0.9 million SHU.

Ingredients

  • ¼ tsp Verbal Warning hot sauce (SS-0087)
  • 12 oz Mexican lager (ice cold)
  • 4 oz Clamato or tomato juice
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Tajín rim

Instructions

  1. 1

Rim a pint glass with lime and Tajín.

  2. 2

Combine hot sauce, Clamato, lime juice, and Worcestershire in the glass.

  3. 3

Stir well — capsaicin doesn't dissolve easily in aqueous liquids.

  4. 4

Add ice, then pour beer slowly down the side.

  5. 5

    Stir gently. Drink with respect.

Tips

  • Start with ⅛ tsp and work up.
  • The beer's carbonation amplifies the burn. Have milk nearby.
Science Note

At roughly 0.9 million SHU, even ¼ tsp of Verbal Warning extract distributes approximately 700 SHU per sip across a full pint — a mild background warmth on its own. The perceived heat is higher because CO₂ pre-sensitizes oral nociceptors.
