Heat comparison

Pepper X measures 2.69 million SHU at peak versus the Carolina Reaper's 2.2 million. That's a 490,000 SHU gap — roughly the heat of an entire habanero pepper stacked on top of a Reaper.

Breeding approach

Both peppers were bred by Ed Currie at PuckerButt Pepper Company through traditional selective breeding over 10+ years. Pepper X involved crossing multiple superhot varieties and selecting for capsaicin concentration across hundreds of generations.

Appearance

The Carolina Reaper has a distinctive wrinkled red skin with a pointed tail. Pepper X is smaller, smoother, and typically green when harvested — a much less dramatic appearance for a much more dramatic pepper.

Availability

The Carolina Reaper is widely available as seeds, plants, powders, and in thousands of hot sauce products. Pepper X is extremely limited — Ed Currie has tightly controlled distribution since its verification.
