What happened to CropOS
Benson Hill filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in early 2025, ceased operations, and shut down CropOS. The platform, which let plant breeders design flavor traits using a proprietary genomic dataset, is no longer accessible. Teams that relied on it for flavor trait specification, construct discovery, and crop design workflows need an alternative.
The underlying problem CropOS was solving โ that flavor design lacked a quantitative computational layer โ has not gone away. The question is what tools exist now.
02
How the IFI platform covers the same space
8-axis IFI instead of genomic markers
CropOS mapped crop genetics to flavor outcomes via a proprietary trait model. The IFI maps constructs directly to receptor responses โ TRPV1, TRPM5, T1R heterodimers, CaSR, and others. The receptor layer is agnostic to organism; the same axis scores apply whether you are working in pepper, tomato, coffee, hops, or a novel crop.
1,000 constructs, 40 specialty catalogs
CropOS required you to work within Benson Hill's breeding pipeline. The IFI platform lets you search, filter, and license constructs directly from a catalog of 1,000 entries organized by receptor axis, organism, and application. No plant breeding commitment required to explore the design space.
13 organisms beyond pepper
Tomato, coffee, vanilla, hops, garlic, ginger, tea, blueberry, sugarcane, mint, cocoa, and grape each have dedicated organism catalogs. If your CropOS work spanned multiple crops, the IFI covers the full range without a separate pipeline per species.
Quantitative axis scores, not trait predictions
CropOS outputs were trait probabilities tied to Benson Hill's proprietary training data. IFI scores are grounded in published receptor biology โ each axis has a defined receptor basis, a measurement protocol, and a confidence interval. The score is interpretable independently of the platform that generated it.
Programmatic query at enterprise tier
CropOS offered API access for integration into larger design pipelines. The IFI platform does the same โ platform tier includes API access for querying IFI scores, pulling construct records, and exporting data into existing lab workflows. The API schema is documented and stable.
Constructs license independently
CropOS constructs were inseparable from Benson Hill's breeding program โ you could not take the construct and work with another partner. IFI constructs license independently under standard commercial terms. You can take a licensed construct to any CRISPR-capable lab.

A direct comparison
- Flavor model
- Genomic trait markers (proprietary) โ IFI receptor axes (published basis)
- Organism coverage
- Soy, corn, pea (Benson Hill crops) โ 13+ organisms, organism-agnostic model
- Catalog size
- Benson Hill pipeline only โ 1,000 constructs, 40 specialty catalogs
- Access model
- SaaS with Benson Hill pipeline dependency โ SaaS + API, independent licensing
- Availability
- Shut down Q1 2025 โ Active, production platform
- Entry point
- Paid tier required โ Free catalog search, paid platform tier
The comparison is not meant to diminish CropOS, which was an early attempt at quantifying crop flavor design. The difference is that the IFI model starts from receptor biology rather than a proprietary training set, which means the scores transfer across organisms and are auditable against published science.

Getting started
The catalog search is free and does not require an account. It is the fastest way to see whether the constructs you need are available and what their IFI profiles look like. If your work was in a specific organism or flavor axis, the organism and axis catalogs are the fastest entry points.
Teams migrating an active flavor design program from CropOS can request a transition consultation โ a structured session that maps your previous CropOS workflows to IFI equivalents, identifies construct candidates, and establishes a licensing path. Use the custom quote form to describe the scope.
